Drinking in the shade of a tavern
To drink within the vintner's shaded stall
Is for me the greatest of pleasures, my friend
Is a pleasure I hold dear, O neighbor mine,
Especially with a Jewish beauty
Especially in the company of a Jewish maid,
A houri like a radiant moon
Doe-eyed, radiant as the moon moving through the night,
Who serves you from a soft hand
She pours for you from a hand so soft and tender,
As if it were a ripe date
As though it were the white heart of a palm;
Until drunkenness takes hold of her
Until, when the intoxication courses through her,
And makes her behave like a mighty warrior
She assumes the imperious might of a tyrant.
