My youth has passed, and I've given up childish ways
My youthful fervor ends; I shun all play,
Since gray hairs have attacked my temples to abrade
For grey hair strikes my head with disarray.
The prohibition turned me toward righteousness
Reason restrained me, so I sought the Just,
For I feared the talk of the blamer behind my back
And feared the warner's voice, as mortals must.
O heedless one persisting upon sin so oft
O heedless one, who dwells in absent mind,
No excuse remains at the time of standing still
No true excuse for stupor will you find.
On the day the sky lays bare what's atop all heads
Not by our deeds can we attain release,
By our deeds we cannot attain deliverance
The Day the sky appears above the brow.
Save that for my wrongs and neglect, I hope
Yet I, despite my sins and negligence,
God's bountiful pardon and grace I may invoke.
Hope for God's pardon and His benevolence.
