باتَت بِطَرفٍ مُسَهَّد

مَطمومَةٌ تَتَمَرَّد

She settled with a gentle gaze

She spent the night with a wakeful gaze,

Rebellious, she resisted

Overwhelmed, yet turning in rebellion.

لَها مِنَ الظُرفِ وَالحُس

نُ زائِدٌ يَتَجَدَّد

With charm and tenderness

She possesses charm and a beauty

An increase renewed

That is boundless and ever-renewing.

فَكُلُّ حُسنٍ بَديعٍ

مِن حُسنِها يَتَوَلَّد

So every lovely beauty

For every wonder of exquisite grace

From her beauty originated

Is born from her own loveliness.

في القَلبِ مِنّي عَلَيها

حَرارَةٌ تَتَوَقَّد

In my heart for her

Within my heart, on her account,

A warmth kindled

There is a heat that fiercely burns.

تَعودُ بِالوَصلِ طَوراً

وَالعَودُ بِالوَصلِ أَحمَد

She returns with union at times

At times she returns to grant me union,

And return with union is best

And the return to union is most praised.

حَتّى إِذا أَطمَعَتني

تَأبى عَلَيَّ وَتَجحَد

Until when she made me covet

Yet, just as she makes me hunger for hope,

She refused me and denied

She turns against me and denies my claim.

فَما لِقَلبِيَ مِنها

إِلّا العَنا وَالتَرَدُّد

So for my heart from her

So my heart reaps nothing from her

Nothing but regret and hesitation

Save misery and endless wavering.

أَبغي دُنُوّاً إِلَيها

بِالجَهدِ مِنّي فَتَبعُد

I seek nearness to her

I seek to draw closer unto her,

With effort from me yet she distances

But for all my effort, she drifts away.
