Had you loved a pearl, I'd not have asked of them,
Had you been in love with Durra, I would not have asked them:
"Have you a girdle's end to lend?"
"Do you have a surplus sash that you might lend to me?"
Nor would I ask for any pearl but her kiss -
And I ask of Durra nothing other than her kiss,
In it lies healing, if she would grant it me.
For in it lies a healing, if she would but favor me.
I mixed my faith with the faith of the Rum, so they mingled
I mixed my faith with the faith of the Romans until they merged,
As water mingles with sweet basil drink.
Just as water is mixed with the pure, vintage wine.
I seek not, my censurer, to replace her;
So I seek no substitute for her, O you who blame me,
For through them my faith has become two faiths in one.
Since I have gained, through them, two religions within one.
