نَجوتُ مِنَ اللِصِّ المُغيرِ بِسَيفِهِ
إِذا ما رَماهُ بِالتِجارِ سَبيلُ
I escaped the thief's fatal blade
I escaped the raiding thief with his sword,
Who makes of men his living trade
When the road cast him upon the merchants,
وَسَلَّطتُ خَمّاراً عَلَيَّ بِخَمرِهِ
فَراحَ بِأَثوابي وَرُحتُ أَميلُ
Then drunkenness enslaved my soul
But I empowered a vintner over me with his wine,
And took my clothes and self-control
So he departed with my robes, and I was left swaying.
