You punished me more than I deserved,
You punished me far beyond the measure of my crime,
And oppressed me, relishing my oppression.
And wronged me, finding sweetness in my suffering.
You thought I wouldn’t seek revenge,
You imagined I would not seek retribution,
So you were silent when you knew.
So you kept silent, though you knew the truth.
If only I had a soul that obeyed me,
If only I possessed a soul that would obey my will,
You would not beat me to the stabbing.
You would not have beaten me to the severing of ties.
My enemies have reveled in their hatred,
You have let my enviers gloat by granting their desire,
Lifting them up and calling them my name.
Exalting them, and calling them by the name once mine.
I trusted you with my rights,
You used to be certain of the rights I held,
Until I saw you take their side against me.
Until I found you, not them, to be my adversary.
If I said what they claim I did,
If I have indeed said what they allege,
Then I ate the flesh of madness.
Then may I, in madness, devour my own flesh.
So pass on lightly, serious avenger,
So achieve the vengeance you seek through this mockery,
This jest that seemed good to you and insult me freely.
As you see fit, and deem it lawful to revile my name.
