I ransom you, I have no turning away from you,
May I be your ransom; from you I have no will to turn,
Nor in passion any disengagement from you.
Nor in this love can I obtain from you a just return.
Your union is to me the refined honey,
Union with you is, to my taste, the honey pure and sweet,
Your separation is to me bitter aloe.
While your estrangement is a poison, deadly and complete.
A questioner asked when I would be consoled of her,
And when she asked, 'When will his heart be comforted of her?'
I said to her, "When the morning becomes hoary."
I answered her, 'When the raven’s feathers turn as white as fur.'
I circle your abode each day,
I circle round your palace walls with every passing day,
As if your abode was made for circling.
As if the holy Rite of Circling were ordained for your way.
And were it not for love of you I'd have kept to my home,
Were it not for your love, I would have stayed within my door,
For in my home is restful comfort for me.
For in my home awaits the choicest, purest wine in store.
I am the slave who acknowledges the length of bondage,
I am the slave who testifies his servitude is true,
And from a slave there is no opposition to you.
And never from a slave comes opposition against you.
