Serve the cup in daylight
Hasten to the goblet while it is day,
And drink the aromatic wine
And drink the potent vintage, old and rare;
Pour it for me as freely as it pours
And pour for me exactly as you drink,
In measures of precise gauge
A measured cup, an equal, honest share.
Jasmine-scented, exhaling musk
An ancient wine diffusing scent of musk,
And telling of the wine-steward
That mimics pomegranate blooms in red;
If you add more water to it
For if you drown it heavily with water,
It will only increase your tipsiness
It only brings a sickness to the head.
Go ahead into pleasures, forward
So plunge right on into the path of joy,
And cast off all inhibitions
And cast away the bridle of restraint;
Make the garden your house
And make the garden orchard your abode,
And make the village your home
And make the village your true dwelling place.
Set up a bathhouse in it
And fly the cooing pigeons in its midst,
And get connected with the professionals
And tether there the foals of noble race.
And when it's time for harvest
And when the harvest season comes around,
And you expect juice extraction
And you anticipate the pressed-out juice,
Cook the wine with the sun
Then cook the wine beneath the open sky—
For the sun is fire enough
The sun is fire enough for such a use.
