The carrier of passion grows weary,
The bearer of passion is weary,
Worn down by distress,
Made unsteady by the rapture of love.
If he weeps he is right to do so,
If he weeps, he is justified,
What ails him is no jest,
For his plight is no mere game.
You laugh heedlessly,
You laugh, distracted and amused,
While the lover laments grievously,
While the lover weeps in despair.
You marvel at my sickness,
You are amazed by my sickness,
Yet it is your health that amazes me,
But my health is the real wonder.
Whenever one reason from you expires,
Whenever one cause comes to an end,
Another reason from you transpires,
A new cause from you returns to me.
