My eyes, I blame you, not my heart
My eye, 'tis you I blame, and I blame not
You are the one who poisoned it
The heart—for my heart bears no guilt in this.
With anguish, grief, and sorrow
It was you who burdened it with heavy woe,
And watered it with your ever-flowing
With affliction, wasting sickness, and distress;
Tears, over and over
And you watered it with your streaming tears,
Thus love grew in it and matured
Shed profusely, pouring torrent upon torrent,
And it became intimate with all love
Until passion grew within it and blazed high,
Woe to me for the graceful gazelle
Becoming the familiar dwelling of all love.
With lustrous eyes, most beautiful
Woe is me for that white gazelle, the innocent,
You see his sins as my own
The young fawn, dark-lipped and slender-waisted.
While my sins loom large in his eyes
His offenses against me follow in succession,
When he visits we welcome him warmly
While my single fault looms massive in his eyes.
When we visit he does not reciprocate our warmth
If he visits, we offer welcome; yet if
And if I write to him complaining
We visit him, we find no welcome there.
He cannot find answers to my letters
And when I write to him to voice my grief,
He grants no generous answer to my lines.
