Sleep has fled, seeking refuge
Sleep has fled and sought refuge
From my madness, as if
From my madness, as if
It too has learned coldness
It, too, from the beloved
From the beloved.
Has learned the art of estrangement.
Restrain the heart if it pines,
Rebuke the heart if it yearns,
And blind the eye likewise
And blame the eye, just as
As your youth blinded your heart
You burdened your heart with
With love until it was blinded.
Passion, until it bore the weight.
Oh eye, you were for me
You, O eye, were for me
A ladder for passions,
A ladder leading to obsession,
Then you burdened me with longing -
Then you loaded me with the unbearable
No! And made me weep blood.
And made me weep tears of blood.
Then you befriended the Pleiades
Then you forged a bond between
And the star in the sky.
My gaze and the star in the sky;
Strange - how has it not become
It is a wonder how it did not become,
Lost in yearning like me?
Like me, enslaved by love.
If you were not wretched,
Had you not been destined for misery,
Oh eye, I'd not be lovelorn.
You would never have become a lover.
Love pitched its tent
Love has halted its caravan
In my heart and settled.
Within my heart and pitched its tents,
So it will not depart forever
So it shall not depart for all time,
Even if I say "be gone!"
Even if I say it has set forth.
