أحسنُ من ركضٍ إلى مارقٍ

يُقتل فيها المرءُ أو يُجرح

Better than racing to a battle

Better than charging at a renegade,

Where a man is killed or wounded

Where a man is slain or maimed by the blade,

ركوبُ ظبيٍ من بني هاشمٍ

للعينِ في وجنتهِ مطرَحُ

Is riding a young camel from Bani Hashim

Is mounting a gazelle of Hashim's line,

With eyelashes resting on its cheek

On whose cheek the wandering eye is stayed.
