O you who reproach me in anger
O you who blames me for the
When did you become foolish?
wine, when did you turn so foolish?
With me you were nothing but sincere advice
I deemed you, in all else but
If we obeyed the reproacher
this, a figure of wise counsel.
We would have obeyed God in that
If we were to heed a scolder,
So pass me in the morning a bitter cup
We would have heeded God in this.
O my boon companion, and serve it to me
So take a morning draught of vintage,
For with people's blame, I yearn for it
O companion, and pour it out for me.
For I, at the very blame of
people, desire it all the more.
