1. هَل تَعطِفانِ عَلى العَليلِ

    لا بِالأَسيرِ وَلا القَتيلِ

    Do you have mercy on the sick man

    Neither prisoner nor slain?

  2. باتَت تَقَلُّبُهُ الأَكُف

    فُ سَحابَةَ اللَيلِ الطَويلِ

    His writhing has gone on

    Through the long night’s cloud.

  3. يَرعى النُجومَ السائِرا

    تِ مِنَ الطُلوعِ إِلى الأُفولِ

    He herds the passing stars

    From rising to setting

  4. فَقَدَ الضُيوفُ مَكانَهُ

    وَبَكاهُ أَبناءُ السَبيلِ

    His guests are lost to him

    And Wayfarers' sons bewail him.

  5. وَاِستَوحَشَت لِفِراقِهِ

    يَومَ الوَغى سِربُ الخُيولِ

    His horses were lonely without him

    On the day of battle in the melee,

  6. وَتَعَطَّلَت سُمرُ الرِما

    حِ وَأُغمِدَت بيضُ النُصولِ

    The gatherings of lances are disrupted

    And the swords unmuffled.

  7. يافارِجَ الكَربِ العَظي

    مِ وَكاشِفَ الخَطبِ الجَليلِ

    O You who relieve great sorrows

    And reveal grievous afflictions,

  8. كُن ياقَوِيُّ لِذا الضَعي

    فِ وَيا عَزيزُ لِذا الذَليلِ

    Be strong for this weak man

    And mighty for this abased one.

  9. قَرِّبهُ مِن سَيفِ الهُدى

    في ظِلِّ دَولَتِهِ الظَليلِ

    Draw him nigh to the sword of right guidance

    In the shade of his gracious rule.

  10. أَوما كَشَفتَ عَنِ اِبنِ دا

    وُودٍ ثَقيلاتِ الكُبولِ

    Have you not relieved the burdens

    Of the son of Da'ud, the heavily laden?

  11. لَم أُروَ مِنهُ وَلا شَفي

    تُ بِطولِ خِدمَتِهِ غَليلي

    I have not been solaced by him,

    Despite my long service and agony.

  12. اللَهُ يَعلَمُ أَنَّهُ

    أَمَلي مِنَ الدُنيا وَسولي

    God knows that he

    Is my hope in this world and my desire.

  13. وَلَئِن حَنَنتُ إِلى ذُرا

    هُ لَقَد حَنَنتُ إِلى وُصولِ

    If I have inclined unto his household

    I have inclined unto reunion.

  14. لابِالغَضوبِ وَلا الكَذو

    بِ وَلا القَطوبِ وَلا المَلولِ

    Neither in anger, nor lies,

    Nor turning away, nor wearied.

  15. ياعُدَّتي في النائِبا

    تِ وَظُلَّتي عِندَ المَقيلِ

    O my support in disasters

    And my shade at the resting-place!

  16. أَينَ المَحَبَّةُ وَالذِما

    مُ وَما وَعَدتَ مِنَ الجَميلِ

    Where is the love, the pact,

    And the good you promised?

  17. أَجمِل عَلى النَفسِ الكَري

    مَةِ فِيَّ وَالقَلبِ الحَمولِ

    Be generous to my noble soul

    And my burdened heart!

  18. أَمّا المُحِبُّ فَلَيسَ يُص

    غي في هَواهُ إِلى عَذولِ

    The lover cannot be blamed

    If he does not incline to rejection.

  19. يَمضي بِحالِ وَفائِهِ

    وَيَصُدُّ عَن قالٍ وَقيلِ

    He will go on in his loyalty

    And turn away from slander and talk.
