I see the sea before me, hurling waves.
And behind me I see a blazing necklace of light.
For the sea is nothing but the soul, transported by knowledge;
and the light is nothing but thought, seeking release.
I yearn for the Alhambra—lovesick and robbed of sleep—
and bring forth the poems from my heart in an outpouring,
as a clipped-winged bird yearns when it sees
birds returning to their nests in flocks.
The specter of despair makes me desolate when it steals through the night,
but the vision of beauty comforts me when it whispers to me.
