Does diversion make you lonely, while the grave gives you companionship?
A stranger to every dwelling are you, O soul.
You came into the world wholly unprepared,
And you return only as a tooth is wrenched out.
Your wavering amid desire has bewildered me,
While you remain in doubt, your brooding drawn out.
No dwelling pleases you, one after another—
Near yet far from you, its mourning is a wedding.
You never recalled what came before, after so long an estrangement,
Nor learned what comes after; confusion led you on.
You blundered through a pitch-dark night of doubt,
Yet dawn and sunlight cannot but arise.
You tell me, “Earth is no abiding home;
That other home is mine—its desolation is companionship.”
I shall depart a body in which I am like fragrance
From a flower, lingering after the plant has withered.
Is this departure of yours an everlasting sleep,
Or the great awakening whose beginning is the grave?
O soul, you are the secret, and the secret is obscure,
Like writing on a page over which ink has spilled.
You wavered between good and evil in your desire;
From you to yourself come blessing and misery.
You have only ever been two within a single body:
One has a heart, and the other has a head.
Are you myself, or are you not a part of me? For I
See two within my body, their conversation a whisper.
Between the two, my bewilderment has long endured:
One bell urges me on, another holds me back.
Their weapon is keen, and their desire is their judge;
I have no armor when they clash, and no shield.
After death, will you go away to no purpose,
Like wine poured out when its cup is broken?
How welcome that would be!—and so have spoken
Many; yet all that they say is despair.
Return, then, in faith, and you shall have a homeland;
Otherwise, within the grave both fortune and misfortune end.
No paradise to hope for and no fire to fear—
Then I forget and am forgotten, and existence lies in misery.
I die and live each day—is it so beneath the earth,
As in sleep, when I sink away and sense departs me?
Blessed is the one who rests securely in the grave:
There the sickness is healed, or the defilement cleansed.
