I saw the flowers of Nawaa blossoming,
Bringing sorrow, not joy to me.
I loved the blooms of my land,
Yet hated their peers in Nawaa.
Long has the memory of the past
Flooded me with sweet fragrance.
My homeland’s blooms filled my heart
In youth with tender passions.
Their hues matched my very soul
In days when dew was plentiful.
But grief and cares have faded them;
While Nawaa’s blooms stayed beautiful.
No more do they love verdure now,
Or smiles, however bright they glow.
To sufferers, the fortunate seem mean;
The blind envy the sighted’s vision clear.
Since the blooms withered in my heart,
I shun to walk where flowers grow.
I’ve lost my poetry; my heart itself
Nearly lost all sense of joy.
My eyes long for my tears, my grief;
My tears are tempted forth to flow.
The rain makes not the broken bough
Turn green again, but sun can do.
Today stern wisdom tutored me;
I’ve grown mature from its decree.
I’ve wandered in a world of woes
With exile cutting through my years.
Till I saw how spring sent as gift
To mortals blossoms far and near.
Then in the market I resolved to buy
Flowers, though brief their span, like mine.
I wished to pluck them, yet reflected -
Plucking them is no great design.
I said: O heart, just smell this bloom,
One day you surely will take flight!
Since the loss of blissful Eden
You still recall its scents and light.
