O rose of Tunisia, how can spring be pleasant
When injustice has withered its freshness from Tunisia
You were once its ornament, now you are for its bier
So shed for its misfortune your silken robes
Virtue and beauty have no dignity
Under the rule of an unjust tyrant overlord
If an Arab aspires the breaths of passion
Or if he yearns for days gone by
They curb the wings of the proudest souls
Can there be a state for the weakened majority
Who wore the armor of iron, the noblest of garb
So the Frenchman sees his share of luck
Like that of his wavering king
