1. سأستجدي صغيراً من كبيرِ

    وأرغبُ في حصاةٍ من ثبيرِ

    I will implore a little from the great

    And desire a pebble from the overabundant

  2. وأقنعُ بالقليل النزرِ ممّن

    يجودُ وليس يقنَعُ بالكثيرِ

    And be content with the meager, diminutive from one

    Who is generous and does not settle for much

  3. ألا إنَّ النفوسَ إذا أَحَبَّت

    أَذَلَّت في الخَطيرِ وفي الحَقيرِ

    Indeed, when souls love

    They are humbled in danger and in the lowly

  4. ومن يرجو الملوك لكلِّ أمرِ

    فلا يَذَرُ الحقيرَ مِنَ الأُمورِ

    And whoever hopes for kings in every matter

    Does not neglect the lowly among matters

  5. ووجهُ العذرِ في الأسفارِ بادٍ

    فلا أحتاجُ فيهِ إلى سفورِ

    And the face of excuses on journeys is clear

    So I do not need to explain it

  6. رأيتُ الحبَّةَ البيضاءَ عزَّت

    فكيفَ يسيرُ بِي طاوِي المَصيرِ

    I saw the white seed proud

    So how can the twister of fate make me proceed

  7. متى أصغى إلى تصهالِ طِرفٍ

    يُجِبهُ بالعويلِ وبالزَفيرِ

    Whenever I listen to the whinnying of a colt

    It answers with wailing and neighing

  8. وأورِدُه المناهل وَهيَ زرقٌ

    فيصدُرُ بي عن الماءِ النميرِ

    And I lead it to the waters while they are still blue

    Yet it neighs at the water angrily

  9. وإن أَصفِر ليشربَ قالَ مَهلاً

    أصِفرُ الجوفِ يشرَبُ بالصَفيرِ

    And if it turns yellow to drink it says wait

    A yellow belly drinks with whistling

  10. أحسَّ بوسقِ أَبعِرةٍ رآها

    فأقبل يرتعي بَعرَ البَعيرِ

    It feels the musk of a she-camel it saw

    So it starts grazing the camel's hair

  11. ورام يسيرُ من طَرَبٍ إليها

    فقَيَّدَهُ الهُزالُ عنِ المَسيرِ

    And it tries to walk out of joy towards it

    But emaciation restrains it from going

  12. ورمتُ أخادِعُ الكَيَّالَ فيما

    لديه فقال لي نَزرا بزورِ

    And I deceived the trickster regarding what he has

    So he told me only a little with dishonesty

  13. وأُنشِدُهُ من المَروِيِّ طوراً

    وطوراً من بُنَيّاتِ الضميرِ

    And I recite to him sections from Al-Marwi

    And sections from the compositions of conscience

  14. وأذكرُ للفرزدقِ ألفَ بيتٍ

    وأُكثِرُ في الروايةِ عن جريرِ

    And I mention to Al-Farazdaq a thousand verses

    And exaggerate in narrating about Jarir

  15. فقالَ لِيَ الذَميمُ إليكَ عَنِّي

    فليسَ الشِّعرُ يُقبَلُ في الشَّعيرِ

    So the slanderer said to me about me

    Poetry is not acceptable with barley

  16. فلا تُخبر عن الأمم المواضي

    فإنَّكَ قد سقطتَ على الخبيرِ

    So do not inform about the nations' meadows

    For you have fallen into the expert

  17. أترجو فِطرَ أهل الصَّومِ عِندي

    فأنت ترومُ تَيسيرَ العسيرِ

    You hope for the dawn meal of the fasting people with me

    Yet you intend to make the difficult easy

  18. أراكَ شَمَمتَ رائحةَ الأماني

    لذلك شِمتَ بارقةَ السُرورِ

    I see you sensed the scent of wishes

    That's why you smelled the breeze of joy

  19. أميرٌ قد محا ظلم الليالي

    وأغرق جوده نوبَ الدهورِ

    A prince who erased the injustice of nights

    And drowned his generosity in eras of time

  20. يملُّ الدهرُ من يأسٍ وبأسٍ

    وليس يمَلُّ من خيرٍ وخيرِ

    Time grows weary of distress and affliction

    And does not grow weary of good and goodness

  21. تلاعبُ في مواهبهِ الأماني

    كأمثالِ السفائِنِ في البحورِ

    Wishes play in his gifts

    Like ships in the seas

  22. لَهُ في شدةِ الأَزماتِ رَوحٌ

    كَبَردِ الظلِّ في حرِّ الهَجيرِ

    In the intensity of crises, he has a soul

    Like the coolness of shade in the heat of noon

  23. فأحسنُ منظَرٍ بِرٌّ جميلٌ

    يُزَفُّ به إلى عبدٍ شكورِ

    So the best view is righteousness and beauty

    With which he is brought to a grateful servant

  24. علمتُ وقد شكرتُ عُلاكَ أني

    إلى التقصيرِ أُنسبَ والقصورِ

    I knew and thanked your loftiness that I

    Am ascribed to inadequacy and deficiency

  25. جناحي قُصَّ بالأزماتِ لكِن

    بوفرك سَوف يُصبحُ ذا وُفُورِ

    My wings were cut short by adversities but

    With your abundance they will become plentiful

  26. ولو قد رِشتهُ طارَ انتهاضا

    فما هو بالمهيضِ ولا الكسيرِ

    And if they were oiled, it would soar high

    For it is neither weak nor broken

  27. إذا عبرتُ عن تلك السجايا

    فقد عبرتُ عن نَشرِ العبيرِ

    When I expressed those traits

    I expressed the spreading of fragrance

  28. بقيتَ لنا وسمعُك ليس يخلو

    من استحسانِ مُثنٍ أو مُشِيرِ

    You remained for us, and your hearing does not lack
