مات أبو سهل فواحسرتا

أن لم يكن قد مات مذ جُمعه

Alas, Abu Sahl died, what sorrow!

If only he had died earlier

ما حزني إلا لأن لم يمت

بموته من أهلهِ تسعَه

My grief is not that he died

But that when he died, nine of his family did not die with him

مصيبة لا غفر الله لي

إن أنا أذريت له دَمعَه

It is an unforgivable calamity for me

If I were to shed a tear for him
