1. Never ask, in love, about his sorrows;

    his very plight declares the truth of his condition.

  2. And if what he uttered was a complaint, then

    the tongue of tears has made his own tongue needless.

  3. For his glory is the humiliation over which you made him weep

    in loving him—and gain lies in his loss.

  4. Since separation’s day, his soul has parted from him;

    if only it would return to his body!

  5. Stranger than all else is that his heart

    journeyed away, yet never yearned for its homelands.

  6. I suppose that, when it saw a campsite trace effaced,

    it disowned what once had been familiar to it.

  7. He yearned for the gazelles of the sandhill; and everyone who

    camps upon the sandhill yearns for its gazelles.

  8. No one at all can match him in his beauty,

    nor can anyone match Ṣadr al-Dīn in his beneficence.

  9. When, one day, he sits on his throne with knees drawn up, who then

    is Khosrow Anūshirwān within his palace hall?

  10. He disposes the fates by his decrees,

    knowing full well that Time is one of his pages.
