قَطَعتُ شَبيبَتي وأَضَعتُ عُمري
وقد أَتعَبتُ في الهَذَيانِ فكري
I wasted my youth and spent my life
Exhausting my mind with delusions
وما لي أجرةٌ فيه ولا لي
إذا ما متُّ يوما بَعضُ أجر
Without gaining any reward or benefit
If I die one day, I will have little to show
قرأتُ النحوَ تبياناً وفَهماً
إلى أن كُعتُ منه وضاق صدري
I studied grammar intently to understand
Until I was fed up and my chest tightened
فما استنبَطتُ منه سوى محال
يُحَال بِه على زَيدٍ وعَمرِو
All I gained were absurd examples
With Zayd and Amr as subjects
فكان النصب فيه عليَّ نصباً
وكان الرفَّعُ فيه لغير قدري
Grammatical case rules felt like impositions on me
Nominatives were not my fate
وكان الخفضُ فيه جلَّ حَظِّى
وكان الجزم فيه لقطع ذكري
The genitives were the sum of my luck
The imperatives cut short my mention
وفي علمِ العَرُوض دخلتُ جَهلا
وعُمتُ بخفَّتي في كلِّ بَحرٍ
And in the science of prosody, I entered ignorant
My lightness spread through every meter
فأذكرَني به التفعيلُ بَيتاً
تضمَّنَ نصفَهُ الشَيخُ المَعَرِّى
So the prosodic feet reminded me of a line
Whose first hemistich was by Al-Ma'arri
مُفَاعَلُّن مُفَاعَلَتُن فعُولن
حَديثُ خُرَافةٍ يا أمَّ عَمرو
Mustafa'ilun, mustaf'ilatun, fa'ulun
Nonsense talk, O mother of Amr!
وكم يومٍ بِبَيعِ اللَّحمِ عندي
يُعَدُّ من البَوَارِ بأَلفِ شَهرِ
And how many days selling meat I counted
As thousands of months of misery
ولما أن غَدَا لا بَيعَ فيه
مع الميزان أشبَهَ يَومَ حَشرِ
But when there were no sales one day
The scales were like Judgment Day
ودُكَّاني جَهَنَّمُ إذ زُبُونيَّ
زَبَانِيَةٌ بهم تعذيبُ سرِّى
My shop became a hell, with my customers
Devils torturing my innermost thoughts
وفيها زَفرَةٌ من غير لَحمِ
وقد وُضِعَت سلاسلُها بنَحري
With wailing without meat
And chains bound around my neck
وقد طال العذابُ عليَّ فيها
لمَا قَدَّمتُ من بَخسِ ووِزرِ
The torment was prolonged for me there
For my fraud and burden
فإن لام الغدول أقول دعني
أنا في ضيعة في وسطِ عُمرِي
So if the swindlers blame me, I say leave me be
I am in decline in the midst of my life
وعَمِّي قد غَدَا غَمِّي وأمسَى
يحطُّ ببخلِهِ قدري وقَدرِي
My uncle's mood swings are my woe
His stinginess diminishes my worth
وإِنَّ الشِّعرَ دون عُلاهُ قَدراً
ولا سيَما إذا ما كان شعري
For poetry without mastery is lowly
Especially my poetry
لأني ما قرأتُ لهُ صحاحاً
ولا نحوا على الشيخ ابن بَرِّي
Since I never studied its canon
Or grammar with Ibn Barri
وقد شاركتُ في لُغَةٍ ونحو
بلا علمٍ وشاعَ بذاك ذِكري
I dabbled in language and grammar
Without knowledge, spreading my fame
وعيشك لستُ أَدري ما طَحَاها
وقد أَقرَرتُ أني لستُ أدري
I do not know what your life is like
I admit I do not know
وذا خبري ولو كشَّفت عني
لصغَّرَهُ بعلم الجهل خُبرى
And this is my news, but if you unveiled me
My ignorance would belittle my wisdom
كأني مثلُ بعض الناس لما
تعلَّم آيتين فصار مُقرِى
It's as if I'm like some people who
When they learn two verses, become a reciter
