والجسم ذاب من جوى
The sickness of longing kept me awake

الليل جن ونوى
من بعد ذاك البلج
The night grew dark with evil portent
After that rapturous union
بهاؤه عطر نسيم
كنرجس منه قديم
His brilliance is the fragrance of the breeze
Like an ancient narcissus flower it teases
دعني أشم ذا الشميم
من شمر فاض البهج
Let me inhale this sweet perfume
Wafting from his overflowing rapture
تملك الجسم العليل
فالسحر منه في الكحيل
It seizes my ailing body
Bewitching like kohl in the eyes
أصابني سهم كليل
من رونقيه الدعج
I was struck by an arrow of night
From his alluring charm
ثناؤه حشو الحشا
والقلب ذاب دهشا
His praise is poetry's substance
My heart melted, amazed
يا ليتني زرت الرشأ
الوصل منه علج
If only I could visit the meadow
Where union with him would cure me
جماله زهر يفوح
كسوسن منه يلوح
His beauty is a blossoming flower
A lily beckons from his bower
الورد منه في جنوح
ها شادن في دلج
The rose in his care blooms
Behold, exalted in the shadows
حوى الظبا ربع الحمى
وجزعها مأوى الظما
He crossed the gazelle's spring meadow
Their sorrow was a refuge for thirst
السمك منها في سما
في ظلها منعرج
The fish swam above in the heavens
Beneath its shade a winding path
خيامها في بيد طي
وضرعها كثبان طي
His tents in the wide desert
And the livestock like sand dunes
عرج أخي نحو حي
لروضها المؤرج
Come, my brother, to the pasture
To its blossoming gardens
دام الهناء والسرور
بين الموالي في القصور
May happiness and joy persist
Between lovers in their castles
الصبح عنا صاح نور
من مبسميه الأرج
Dawn called to us with shining light
From his smiling lips
ذاب الفؤاد والحذق
من ومضه بين الغسق
My heart and mind melted
From his sparkle in the dusk
الكحل منه في حرق
وروحه في هرج
The kohl burned in my eyes
And his spirit stirred confusion
رق الزجاج كالهوى
والعشق في قلبي كوى
The glass melted like passion
And love burned hot inside me
الراح في الكأس دوى
من وصب ذاك الوهج
The wine echoed in the cup
From the pouring of that blaze
زار الغزال في المنام
والطيف مني في ملام
The gazelle visited in a dream
My specter blamed him
الجفن مني في غرام
من بين آس سمج
My eyelids blamed themselves
Among the misery of parting
طار الفؤاد في القرى
والغمض قد خزى الكرى
My heart flew to the villages
And my blinking chastised fate
السهم في الجسم انبرى
والنار فيه عجج
The arrow pierced my body
And the fire within blazed
ظبي حمى ربع الحلك
فتت في سير الفلك
My gazelle crossed the celestial sphere
The stars became my orbit
النجم صار لي فلك
من نعمة الممتزج
From the blessing of this union
I concealed my love, O tease
كتمت حبي يا عذول
وبت في شمس الأفول
And spent the night in sunset's unease
The dawn attacked my night of loss
ليل لي الصبح يصول
من ثغر ذاك الفلج
From the smile of his lips
When dawn broke from him
لما بدا منه الصباح
همت هناك في فرح
I yearned for joy there
My heart melted and was wounded
ذاب الفؤاد وانجرح
من شدة اللذخرج
From the intensity of that rupture
I had been sick with anxiety
قد كنت في سقم الخفا
والبين مني شططا
And distance made me frantic
I wanted to come down to him
أردت منه الهبطا
فأومأن لا تعج
But he gestured not to hurry
I carved that apparition
نحت على ذاك الخيال
وبت أرعى ذا الجمال
And spent the night herding that beauty
Perhaps it will give me hope
لعل ذاك لي أمل
من وصمة المنجدرج
Of a scar from the gushing wound
The ailing one cried in suffering
صاح العليل في نقا
يا محنتي دام البقا
Oh my affliction, may life persist
Oh, my departing one, be my shelter
يا هاجري كن لي مقا
فلحظنا ذو سرج
So our gaze held a secret
The anxious one remained in sadness
ظل الكئيب في ترج
يا مالك القلب الشرح
Oh owner of my heart's relief
Tomorrow pour toward the burial
صب غدا نحو الطرح
في شط ذاك اللجج
In the tumult of those rapids
Console the anxious one
على الكئيب أسل
بسحر لحظ خضل
With the magic of a glance that erred
The arrow in him took hold
السهم فيه زحل
من أجل ذاك درج
For the sake of that progression
The watchdog and sorrow departed
غاب الرقيب والنكد
والوقت طاب ما عند
And the time at hand was pleasant
The breeze blew gently and the body calmed
رق النسيم والجسد
يا رب لا عاد الريج
Oh Lord, may the winds not return
Joy broke my composure and steadfastness
فقت الطباع والثبات
لما نظرت ذا الحياة
When I saw this life
Oh my joy in such times
يا فرحتي في ذا السعات
هذا النسيم يعج
This breeze fills me with passion
The union bid me welcome
قال الوصال مرحبا
سلوني في ذاك الصبا
Ask me about that morning
If you ask about morning
إذا سلوت في صبا
فكل ذاك همج
All of that is raving
The camel walked in the gardens
سار البعير في جنان
والظبي قد حبي الجنان
And the gazelle loved the gardens
A gazelle among the beautiful gazelles
ظبي على ظبي الجيان
منه المغنى نفج
It was the source of my singing
I smelled that perfume from him
شممت منه ذا العبير
عند اللقاء بيسير
At the meeting it was easy
Then he gestured, you are the expert
فأومأن أنت الخبير
يا ليت ليلي يفرج
If only my night would give relief
I yearned for the shaded meadow
همت على ربع الظلل
والفقر منه في امل
And my poverty held such hope
I suffered from the harsh estrangement
تعبت بالصد الزلال
فأحرق القلب الشجي
It set my heart ablaze
The fickle pigeon mocked me
ولي الحمام الكاذب
والصبر منه هارب
And patience had abandoned me
The anxious heart melted
ذاب الفؤاد الكاعب
من مقلتيه وهج
From his glances' intensity
Oh beloved, O beloved
يا غيدا يا غيدا
يا من في روحي رغدا
You whose spirit brought me bliss
Your blame has lasted eternally
مضى ملامك سرمدا
بحق هذا البرج
By the right of this watchtower
