قلُ للفَقيهِ مقالاً ليسَ يَعدَمُ مِن

حُلْو العِتابِ ومُرِّ العَتْبِ تَمْزيجاً

Tell the scholar words blending

Sweet reproach and bitter blame.

إذا فطمْتَ امرأ عن عادةٍ قَدُمَتْ

فاجعَلْ لهُ يا عقِيدَ الفَضلِ تَدريجا

If you wean a man from habit,

Lead him gently, learned guide.

ولا تُعَنِّفْ إذا قوَّمْتَ ذا عِوَجٍ

فرُبَّما أعقبَ التَّقويمُ تَعْوِيجا

Chide him not if he strays;

Mending may itself cause bend.
