تجلد واصطبر إن نابَ دهرٌ

بمكروهٍ يضيقُ له الصدورُ

Endure and be patient if time brings

Distress that oppresses the heart.

فإن الدهرَ عسرٌ ثم يسرٌ

ومن بعدِ الدجى صبحٌ ونورُ

For time bears hardship then ease;

After darkness, the dawn comes, and light.

ولولا الداءُ لم يُحمد شفاءٌ

ولولا الحزنُ لم يُعشق سرورُ

If there were no illness, cure would be unpraised;

If there were no grief, joy would not be adored.
