إذا انقاد الكَلامُ فقُدْهُ عَفْواً

إلى ما تَشتَهِيهِ مِن المَعاني

If words comply, then gently let them go

To meanings that you wish they would convey

ولا تُكرِهْ بَيَانَكَ إنْ تأبَّى

فلا إكراهَ في دينِ البَيَانِ

But do not force your eloquence, if it

Refuses, for no force in rhetoric's way

ثمَّ قالا إلَهَنا قد سَئِمْنا

جَمعَ الرِّيقَ في مَكانِ

Then they both said: "Our God, we're bored of gathering

Spittle in one place."
