  1. بينَ مَن يُعطي ومن يأ

    خذُ في التَّقديرِ عَرْضُ

    Between the giver and the taker

    There is a sublime difference

  2. فيَدُ المُعطي سماءٌ

    ويدُ الآخذ أرْضُ

    The giver's hand is like the sky

    The taker's hand is like the earth

  3. وعلى الآخذِ أن يش

    كُرَ إنَّ الشُّكرَ فرْضُ

    And it's the taker's duty to be thankful

    For gratitude is an obligation

  4. وأخسُّ الوِردِ ما يُكْ

    رَعُ فيهِ وهو بَرْضُ

    The most contemptible gift

    Is that which is forced through coercion
