  1. لوِ ارْتاحَ الزَّمانُ إلى عِتابي

    وأنصَفَ سائليهِ في الجَوابِ

    If time were to rest from blaming me,

    And answer my questions fairly,

  2. لما عاتبْتُهُ إلاَّ على ما

    أغارَ عَليَّ من شَرخِ الشَّبابِ

    I would not reproach it, except for

    What it stole from me of the bloom of youth,

  3. ومن بَهَجَاتِ أيَّامٍ سَرتْ بي

    إلى فَلكِ البُروجِ من التُّراب

    And the delights of days that carried me

    To the celestial sphere from the dust.

  4. تَحَفَّفْ بي ووفَّتْني حُظوظي

    وصفَّتْ مَشْرَبي وكَفَتْ طِلابي

    It endowed me and fulfilled my fortunes,

    Quenched my thirst and sufficed my needs.
