أفدْ طبعَكَ المكدودَ بالجدِّ راحَةٌ

يَجُمُّ وَعَلِّلهُ بِشَيءٍ من المَزحِ

Hard work may weary your inherent disposition

Suppress it, and justify it with a bit of jest

ولكِنْ إذا أعطيْته المَزحَ فلْيَكُنْ

بِمقدارِ ما تُعطي الطَّعامَ مِنَ المِلحِ

But when you give it jest, let it be

In the measure you give food salt
