1. إِن كُنتَ تَطمَعُ في الحَياةِ فَهاتِ

    كَم مِن أَبٍ لَكَ صارَ في الأَمواتِ

    If you aspire to live, bring forth

    How many a father has passed away

  2. ما أَقرَبَ الشَيءِ الجَديدَ مِنَ البِلى

    يَوماً وَأَسرَعَ كُلَّ ما هُوَ آتِ

    How near is the new thing to decay

    One day and swiftest of all to pass away

  3. اللَيلُ يَعمَلُ وَالنَهارُ وَنَحنُ عَم

    ما يَعمَلانِ بِأَغفَلِ الغَفلاتِ

    Night works and day while we in heedlessness

    Do what they work in most heedlessness

  4. يا ذا الَّذي اِتَّخَذَ الزَمانَ مَطِيَّةً

    وَخُطا الزَمانِ كَثيرَةُ العَثَراتِ

    O you who made time your steed

    And time's terrain full of stumbling-places

  5. ماذا تَقولُ وَلَيسَ عِندَكَ حُجَّةٌ

    لَو قَد أَتاكَ مُنَغِّصُ اللَذّاتِ

    What do you say and you have no argument

    If the spoiler of pleasures came to you

  6. أَو ما تَقولُ إِذا حَلَلتَ مَحَلَّةً

    لَيسَ الثِقاتُ لَأَهلِها بِثِقاتِ

    Or what do you say if you came to dwell

    In a place not safe for its people

  7. أَو ما تَقولُ إِذا حَلَلتَ مَحَلَّةً

    لَيسَ الثِقاتُ لِأَهلِها بِثِقاتِ

    Or what do you say if you came to dwell

    In a place not safe for its people

  8. أَو ما تَقولُ وَلَيسَ حُكمُكَ نافِذاً

    فيما تُخَلِّفُهُ مِنَ التَرِكاتِ

    Or what do you say and your rule not enforced

    In what you leave behind of inheritances

  9. ما مَن أَحَبَّ رِضاكَ عَنكَ بِخارِجٍ

    حَتّى تَقَطَّعَ نَفسُهُ حَسَراتِ

    None loved your pleasure at the price

    Of rending his soul with regrets

  10. زُرتَ القُبورَ قُبورَ أَهلَ المُلكِ في الـ

    ـدُنيا وَأَهلِ الرَتعِ في الشَهَواتِ

    You visited the graves, the graves of kings

    Of luxury in the world, and people of dissipation

  11. كانوا مُلوكَ مَآكِلٍ وَمَشارِبٍ

    وَمَلابِسٍ وَرَوائِحٍ عَطِراتِ

    They were kings of foods and drinks

    And clothes, perfumes and sweet scents

  12. فَإِذا بِأَجسادٍ عَرينَ مِنَ الكِسا

    وَبِأَوجِهٍ في التُربِ مُنعَفِراتِ

    And lo, bodies bare of clothes

    And faces in the soil disfigured

  13. لَم تُبقِ مِنها الأَرضُ غَيرَ جَماجِمٍ

    بيضٍ تَلوحُ وَأَعظُمٍ نَخِراتِ

    Earth left of them only skulls

    White, gleaming, and bones decayed

  14. إِنَّ المَقابِرَ ما عَلِمتُ لِمَنظَرٌ

    يُهدي الشَجا وَيُهَيِّجُ العَبَراتِ

    Truly the tombs, I knew not are a spectacle

    That melts the firm and excites tears

  15. سُبحانَ مَن قَهرَ العِبادَ بِقُدرَةٍ

    باري السُكونِ وَناشِرِ الحَركاتِ

    Glory to Him who subdued servants by might

    Maker of stillness, spreader of motions
