Look to your own soul, O wretched one!
How long will you go on without fearing God?
Do you not see the days stealthily snatch—
—souls away, choosing which to take?
Cast your gaze: do you see
in west or east
anyone who stayed true to you in hard—
—ship, if you sought refuge under a binding pledge?
How many a brother’s eyes have I closed
with my own hand—a sincere, compassionate brother!
Then I despaired of him, no longer hop—
—ing that he might live, so we might meet again.
Do not deny it, for surely
all who come together must part.
Death is the final end of those who have gone
from among us, and the appointed fate of those who remain.
