O dwellers of the graves, peace be upon you from me
I speak to you though you cannot speak
Think not beloved ones failed to pine
For you, with neither food nor drink
Nay, they discarded and replaced you
And the dove parted them from you
Thus all people alike, so whoever
Has died, has no claim on the living
I asked the graves of kings, and they told me
That in them are but bones and worm
Naught remains of those bodies
That lived in ease except the bones
By Allah, what the dust covers of loved ones
Were the generous when the generous are mentioned
By Allah, what the dust covers of loved ones
Were those whose neighbor was unharmed
Destroyed them He Who destroys kings
And for destruction and decay humans were created
My friend, I forgot the house of my stay
And inhabited a house wherein I have no stay
A house whose people fate desires to move
As if they know not what is intended for them
I gained no pleasure from it but what
Events refused to let last
