How long—if only I knew, O son of Yaqtin—

must I praise you for what you do not bestow upon me?

Indeed, a greeting and a cheerful face from a man

in a position such as yours are not enough for me.

This is an age in which people persist in

the hauteur of kings and the ways of paupers.

Have you not learned—may God reward you well

and increase you in bounty, O son of Yaqtin—

that I want you for this world and its immediate gains,

and do not want you on the Day of Recompense for religion?
