In Baghdad there was a gazelle I cannot forget
I weep whenever he comes to mind
When the dwellings of a lover are far from the beloved
He weeps, yearns, or remembers
O Lord of a long night I stay up waiting
Until the pillar of dawn shone and burst forth
I never thought, since I came to know you
That beds grow thorns
And the night is longer than Judgement Day
To the sleepless lover when his sleep is disturbed
