أَلا إِنَّما الإِخوانُ عِندَ الحَقائِقِ

وَلا خَيرَ في وُدِّ الصَديقِ المُماذِقِ

Alas! Brothers are only during adversities,

And no good is in the affection of the flattering friend.

لَعَمرُكَ ما شَيءٌ مِنَ العَيشِ كُلِّهِ

أَقَرَّ لِعَيني مِن صَديقٍ مُوافِقِ

By your life! Of all life, nothing pleases my eyes,

More than an agreeing friend.

وَكُلُّ صَديقٍ لَيسَ في اللَهِ وُدُّهُ

فَإِنّي بِهِ في وُدِّهِ غَيرُ واثِقِ

And every friend whose love is not for God,

I am not confident in his affection.

أُحِبّو أَخي في اللَهِ ما صَحَّ دينُهُ

وَأَفرِشُهُ ما يَشتَهي مِن خَلائِقِ

Love, my brother, one whose religion is sound,

And furnish him with whatever he desires of creations.

وَأَرغَبُ عَمّا فيهِ ذُلٌّ وَريبَةٌ

وَأَعلَمُ أَنَّ اللَهَ ما عِشتُ رازِقي

And abstain from one in whom is disgrace and doubt,

And know that God, as long as I live, is my Provider.

صَفِيِّ مِنَ الإِخوانِ كُلُّ مُوافِقٍ

صَبورٍ عَلى ما نابَ عِندَ الحَقائِقِ

The purest of brothers is every agreeing one,

Who is patient with what escapes him during adversities.
