الجودُ أَفلَسَهُم وَأَذهَبَ مالَهُم

فَاليَومَ إِن راموا السَماحَةَ يَبخَلوا

Generosity impoverished them and exhausted their wealth

Generosity has impoverished them and swept their wealth away,

So today, if they seek pardon, they act miserly

So today, should they seek to be lavish, they are forced to be stingy.

الجودُ أَفلَسَهُم وَغَيَّرَ حالَهُم

وَاليَومَ إِن سَئَلوا النَوالَ تَمَحَّلوا

Generosity impoverished them and changed their condition

Generosity has impoverished them and changed their very state,

And today if they seek bounty, they make excuses

And today, if asked for bounty, they resort to evasion.
