How different the two Yazids are in generosity
Vast is the gulf between the two Yazids in bounty,
When the noble deeds and glory are counted among people
When noble feats and glory are reckoned by mankind;
Yazid son of Shayban is more generous than both of them
Yazid of Shayban is the nobler of the pair,
Even if Qays bin Aylan and Al-Azad were angry
Though Qays bin Aylan and the Azd may seethe with rage.
A young man no tribe of herders gave birth to
A youth whom the tribe of Ra'in did not bear,
No Lakhm raised him, and no breasts nursed him
Nor Lakhm nor Nahd can claim him as their own;
But Al-Ghurr from the family of Wail raised him
But the radiant stars of Wa'il's house gave birth to him,
And Barrah nursed him, and after her Hind did
Wabara traces his descent, and after her comes Hind.
