1. The aggressor has gone far beyond all bounds in his words,

relying, as he claims, on his strength and forbearance.

  2. And here I am at the threshold of the Messenger Muhammad,

standing, with my trust firmly placed in his grace.

  3. For my enemy has grown brazen and transgressed,

going to extremes in wronging me, driven by the blazing rancors of his ignorance.

  4. Does he not know that to the Prophet and his Household is my allegiance—

that I have bound my cord to his?

  5. Far be it from his lofty dignity to turn me away

abased, when through his bounty I have hoped for honor.

  6. Far be it that hands of bounty whose reach exceeds all bounds should fail me,

when the vast universe was created for his sake.

  7. I cherish a hope in the hidden potency of his might:

that I shall triumph, while my foe remains abased.

  8. Through the Chosen One’s exalted rank I have sought refuge among humankind,

and propped up a back already collapsing beneath its burden.

  9. I have poured out my complaint to the sovereign might of his glory,

and laid before him a knot whose untying I do not doubt.

  10. My hopes have grown strong, and through him I possess

the greatest hope—for through whom but one like him are hopes fulfilled?

  11. Though his station is exalted far above one such as me,

even the lords of existence have sought refuge in his shade.

  12. Yes, he is the one sought in every circumstance,

the gate to the presence of God and the balance of His justice.

  13. I call to him: O secret of creation and its very source,

O you from whose root the branches of the cosmos grow,

  14. Come to the rescue, come to the rescue, O Messenger of divine favor—for

a servant lost in the broad midst of his own people has none but you.

  15. His enemies have set for him the snares of an ordeal,

and strung the cords of a scheme to sever him.

  16. And you, Father of al-Zahra, are the refuge that braces his back,

and his greatest hope for the granting of his plea.

  17. You are his succor in this world and the next,

and his surest hope for loosening his fetter.

  18. So do not disappoint him, O boundless sanctuary, nor

oppose him, O succor of humankind, because of what he has done.

  19. Repel the enemy who betrayed him, and restrain the one

whose aggression has overtaken him, circling to bring him down.

  20. And decree in mercy: let the enemy die of his rage,

swiftly, by a sword whose blade an unseen hand has brandished.

  21. Look with an eye of compassion upon your servant: he

has come to you—and who but you is the key to his attainment?

  22. Upon you be the blessing of God, O best of all who ever walked,

and upon you, whose sandal ennobled the crown of earth’s expanse,

  23. and upon your Family, your noble Companions, and all their company,

and upon the folk—the companions of the Path and its people.
