وريم فاتك الاجفان يرنو

ويعث عاشا بالقلب لحظا

My eyelids have become heavy with sleeplessness

And my heart quivers for a moment

وعن فتك يهز الرمح قدا

ويجلو رائق الصهباء لفظا

With your absence my spear shakes

And the brightness of dawn vanishes into words

ويوم جاد لي فيه بقرب

به كاد العذول يموت غيظا

That day you were so close to me

I almost died of agony

اساء فرده هجراً وصدا

ونارا بالتباعد قد تلظى

You returned my affection with estrangement and rejection

And the fire of our separation burns hot

بذلت لنفعه وعظي ونصحي

فلم يسمع اذا نصحا ووعظا

I gave you my advice and wise counsel

But you did not listen to advice or heed counsel

وليس يفيد نصح المرء شيئا

لموثق فتنة قد ساء حظا

A man's advice is useless

For one addicted to mischief and ill fate
