1. The shield against calamity, when calamity’s bonds draw tight,

    and circumstances close in and hope is cut off,

  2. is Muhammad’s gate—the gate of all hopes—

    when affection and brotherhood are thrust aside.

  3. His is vast, far-reaching standing; at every moment

    the prophets seek refuge within his dominion.

  4. A beloved whose wish is never refused,

    and through his mediation the decree is averted.

  5. For him the robe of prophethood had already descended,

    while Adam, in the hidden realm, was clay and water.
