من راحمي والقلب شبت ناره

والحب قاطعني وشط مزاره

My consoler, whose heart ignited its fire

And love estranged me, bypassing its path

طارت له مني على بعد المدى

روح تهلل لطفها اطواره

My spirit took flight for him into the far horizon

Exulting in the refinement of its ways

لا تحزني يا عين اذ لم تبصري

حبا نأى ففجاج قلبي داره

Do not grieve, my eye, if you did not behold

A beloved who turned away, so my heart deserted its abode

جمع العجائب شخصه وكأنما

زرت على شمس الضحى ازراره

He combined wonders in himself, as though

I had visited the rising sun in its blossoms

والورد يزهر في حديقة خده

فوق البنفسج مي فهو عذاره

And roses bloom on his cheek,

Above violets, plentiful is their nectar

وغزا القلوب بقده واعانه

طرف سبا البابنا سحاره

He won hearts with his physique and his help

A glance of the doe, a sorceress her magic

الله يا اهل المروءة بامرىءٍ

بالوجد يمضي ليله ونهاره

Oh people of excellence, of a man

Who passes his night and day in fervor

فتك الغرام به واقلق لبه

ريم كريم النبعتين نجاره

Passion seized him and disturbed his heart

A gazelle, pure of lineage, an excellent carpenter

اسمعتمو يال النهى بغزيل

حاكى الصباح تلألأت أنواره

You have heard, O reproachers, of a beauty

That resembles the morning glittering in its lights

لم انس ليلة انس قرب نلته

منه بروض عطرت ازهاره

I did not forget a night of intimacy which I attained

Near him, in a meadow scented with its flowers

والقاع يحضك والغمام سيوله

همرت وقد عم الفلا امطاره

While the plain entices you, and its clouds pour down

I became drunk, and the cups overflowed with their rain

والزهر نلمع في السماء وتنجلي

والزهر قد زان الربا ديناره

The flowers glitter in the sky and clear up

And the flowers have adorned the land with their gold

وغزيلي حلو الطباع مجالسي

ومع الوقار سنا الجمال ازاره

And my gazelle, sweet of nature, my companion

Who combined dignity with the beauty of his raiment

وشذا الازاهر عابق لم ادر هل

هو وحده ام هب فيه عراره

The fragrance of flowers clung - I did not know whether

It was his scent alone or the perfume rubbed onto him

ومكثت اقطع ليل انس لم يمل

نحو الكرى من وجده سهاره

I spent a night of intimacy that did not pall

Toward the generous one, from his fervor an early riser

فشممت وجنته وتكثر لوعتي

لهفا عليه ويكثر استغفاره

I smelled his cheek and my craving increased

Yearning for him, multiplying my seeking of forgiveness

آه على ذاك الزمان ولطفه

قد راح يسكن زفرتي تذكارهع

Oh! That time and its kindness

Which has gone to reside in my sigh of remembrance

نقض الحبيب عهود ايام مضت

فكانني يا مي ما انا جاره

The beloved broke the covenants of passed days

So it was as though, O Mays, I was his neighbor

يا قلب صبرا لا غفلت فانه

يمضي الزمان وتنقضي أدواره

O heart, have patience - do not be neglectful

For time passes and its cycles fade away
