1. لا عذبن العين غير مفكر

    ابدا بها لو مس باصرها العمى

    I shall not delight my eyes with an unthoughtful one

    Never with her, even if blindness touched her sight

  2. واحثها تبكي الطلول مخاطرا

    فيها بكت بالدمع او فاضت دما

    And urge her to shed tears of misfortunes

    With them she wept with tears or overflowed with blood

  3. ولأهجرن من الرقاد لذيذه

    اذ راح اصناف العواذل نوما

    And I shall refrain from sweet slumber

    When the songstresses went to sleep

  4. فاقيم حربا بين عيني والكرى

    حتى يعود على الجفون محرما

    So I wage war between my eyes and the abode

    Until it becomes forbidden to return to the eyelids

  5. هي اوقعتني في حبائل فتنة

    منها عليّ غدا الضياء مطلسما

    She made me fall into the snares of passion

    From which tomorrow the light was veiled from me

  6. قادت فؤادي للعناء بنظرة

    لو لم تكن نظرت لكنت مسلما

    She led my heart to sorrow with a glance

    If she had not glanced, I would still be secure

  7. سفكت دمي فلأسفكن دموعها

    ليرى بها روض الطلول منمنما

    She shed my blood, so I shall shed her tears

    To see the meadows of beauty speckled with dew

  8. فأنا الذي حنقا اكرر ظلمها

    وهي التي بدأت فكانت اظلما

    So I, who angrily repeat her injustice

    While she was the one who started, and was more unjust
