أَيُّهَا اللاّئِم رِفْقاً

بِالذَّي قَدْ ذَابَ عِشْقا

O you who blame, be gentle

With one who has melted with love.

لا يَرُدُّ العْتبُ صَبَّا

بَلْ يَزِيدُ الصَّبَّ شَوْقَا

Reproach brings no relief,

Rather it increases longing.

إنَّ في أذُنيْهِ وَقْراَ

فاتئّد لأنْ لا تَشْقَى

For he has become deaf

So be still, lest you suffer.

حُبُّنَا لِلْشَيْء يُعْمِى

ويصمُ قُلْتُ حَقَّا

Our love for something blinds

And deafens, I said truly.

كُلُمَا تَقُولْ حل غَرْباَ

ففؤادي حَلَّ شَرْقَا

Whenever you say, turn away,

My heart turns to face it.

لا تَرَى الْهَوَى نُزْولاَ

فِيه اللّبيبُ يَرْقَى

Do not see love as a descent,

Rather the wise ascend through it.

كَمْ يُحاكى يَا قُلَيْبِي

لِبرُيق الْغَوْر خَفْقَا

How often, O my heart,

Does the brightness of the pit flutter you?

كُلّ مَا في الْحُّبِّ عَذْبُ

مِنْ عَذَاب فيه يُلْقَى

All that is sweet in love

Comes from torment encountered in it.

فَالْفَنا فيه حَيَاةٌ

فافْنَ إنَّ رِدْتَ تَبْقَى

So destruction in it is life.

Be destroyed if you wish to remain.
