O most generous of people in uncles and brothers,

And finest of people in words and deeds,

When I say your gifts suffice me,

And your good treatment means much to me, you say "No, no."

My soul is yours to redeem, O Lord whose gifts

Come to people without asking, in streams.

You have divided your generosity among those who seek it,

A crown for the head, anklets for the feet.

If another gives but a mite, he glories in it,

While you think little of giving by the pound.

When ill-luck casts shadows on people, you shine on them

A face towards which people throng.

If wealth adorns a man other than you, in truth

You have adorned him, for the real man adorns wealth.
