O maidens of beauty, of love, and of dreams,

Nay, O radiance of this very existence,

The lovely nightingale was created to sing,

And you were fashioned for blissful romance,

And this vast existence were but a grave,

Were it not for your clearing of the world's dark frowns,

And life, before which all dreams bow down,

Is merely death, weighed heavy as chains,

And beloved youth is but old age striving

Toward death along an arduous path,

And the beautiful spring within this world

Is an autumn withering the tremor of roses,

And the sweet blossoms upon the stream's bank

Are merely thorns armored in iron,

And the birds that sing, spending their days

In songs of chanting and warbling sound,

They do but complain to the days of existence,

Lamenting life's burden through their song,

And their anthems are truly gasps of pain,

Splintering forth from every lovesick heart,

A distorted image of existence, were it not for

The twilight of beauty upon those cheeks,

O flowers of life, you belong to love,

Yet it is a perilous spring to approach,

For the path of passion abounds with abysses,

Rife with terror and treacherous ground,

Despite all it holds of beauty and art,

Of genius so vast it cannot be surpassed,

And hymns that intoxicate the hosts of heaven,

And stir emotion in the ribs of the rock,

And fragrance that nearly ravishes the mind,

Drifting between the mysterious and the intense,

The path of life is vast, and it is you

Who strew its length with blooming roses,

If you will it to be a place of joy,

Wondrous in magic, of beauty unique,

Or filled with thorns that bleed virtue and love,

And extinguish the splendor of all existence,

If you will it to be a hideous place,

With darkened horizons and dead to song.
