Live by feeling, and for feeling alone,

For your world is but a cosmos of sentiment and sensation.

It was built upon deep affection and grace,

And would wither dry were it founded on cold contemplation.

It would remain frozen in beauty, forlorn,

Like a ruined temple, abandoned and worn.

It would remain harsh of features, and grim,

Like death itself, desolate, void of whim.

No love would dance upon it, singing loud,

To men amidst the brooks and floral crowd,

With rosy cheeks and footsteps drunk with wine,

Trembling with mirth and happiness divine,

Crowned in blooms, scattering to the throng

The petals of delight, fresh and strong.

Nay, nor would Beauty's art appear so clear

Within the cosmos, beneath a halo sheer,

Cloaked in magic, breathing into his flute,

Passionate notes where streams and thickets shoot,

Or touching the sacred lute, to narrate

To Death, to Days, to Darkness, and to Fate,

Life's share of joy and sorrow's heavy sting,

Of magic, pleasure, and the treacherous thing.

Nor ever would winged Hope come chanting by,

With the voice of a happy dreamer, soaring high,

Those anthems that grant mankind the will of youth,

And the sparrow's bliss, in very truth.

Let feeling be your guide through Nature's ways,

The expert in her vast, enchanted maze.

It walked with Life when young, and paced the mud,

Amidst the skulls and pools of wasted blood,

And raced with her o'er peaks with smiling face,

Singing through eons of time and space.

While Reason, despite his gray and solemn air,

Remains a child in Time's great affair.

He walks, the winds assail him, and he bends,

In pain, like a broken bird that descends.

He keeps on asking himself, philosophizing,

    Pedantic, vain, and lightly analyzing,

Of what the stars conceal behind their veil,

The secret of this world, this hidden tale.

While he is crushed by storms—oh, look at him!

A naive, vain philosopher, so dim.

Open your heart to Existence, let it be,

Left to the deep, the waves, and mystery,

To snows that tempests scatter, and to grief,

To terror, pain, and Fate beyond relief.

And let it brave the storms and wander free,

Upon the cold and clouded boundary,

To dive into Existence's depth, and dare

Its dreaded night, with courage rare,

Until Life clasps it in a close embrace,

And it drinks deeply from her blazing face.

Thus you shall live with heart that overflows,

Awake with feeling, in a dream-like doze,

    In holy, mystic ecstasy profound,

The finest treasure in this world found.
