The living Spring was a spirit, dreaming deep,

Fresh in its youth, in perfumed robes arrayed,

It walked the world with a poet's reverie,

Touring the realms in enchanting parade.

The horizon brims with tenderness, as though

It were the heart of Life, bountiful and unswayed,

The universe, in life’s pure sanctity,

Stands as a temple; the woods, its shrine displayed.

    The blackbird-poet dances, singing loud,

Unto the sun, o'er rose and grassy blade,

Verses of peace and joy, while his own soul

Is drunk on magic that the world portrayed.

The Mountain Serpent saw him, and was vexed

By such pure mirth and youth so bright displayed,

He pounced in malice, striking like the lash

Of Fate itself, a curse the gods conveyed.

Taken aback, the wretched victim cried,

Turning towards the slayer who betrayed,

The poor soul poured forth screams in wild revolt:

"What is my sin, that punishment is laid?"

"Nothing, save that I sing my songs of love,"

"To all creation, warbling in the glade;"

"I find within this world a tender touch,"

"And breathe a lover's secret, unafraid."

"Is this, in all existence, deemed a crime?"

"Where is the justice, friends of days decayed?"

"Nay, ask not where, for here the Sacred Law"

"Is but the despot's will, the strong blade's trade."

"And joy among the weak is but a sin"

"That meets the tyrant's harshest accolade."

"Let this world bear witness, which I sang,"

"With dreams of youth and wonder unallayed,"

"That Peace is nothing but a lying myth,"

"And Justice, ash where dying fires fade."

"No justice lives unless the powers match,"

"And terror clashes with a terror’s raid."

The Serpent grinned a mocking, scornful smile,

And spoke with poise, in falsehood's masquerade:

"O prattling fool, so naive and untaught,"

"I pity how your ignorance is displayed."

"The wise excuse the naive when the heart"

"Leaps with the foolish zeal of youth's cascade."

"So curb your wild emotions, for they stray"

"With your poor wit; hear now the plans I've laid."

"I am a god whom mortals long adored,"

"Who fear my shadow and my curse's blade."

"They come to me with offerings of their kin,"

"Joyful as saints whose debts are fully paid."

"The bliss of pious souls is but to be"

"A sacrifice upon the altar laid,"

"To merge into the Spirit Divine, a part"

"Made holy, cleansed of dross and earthly grade."

"Does it not please you, then, to be my prey?"

"To melt into my nerves, my flesh invade?"

"To become power in my blood, a fire"

"Within my gaze, a sharpness in my fang?"

"To vanish in my soul that never ends,"

"Part of my godhood and my youth's parade?"

    "I grant you deified eternity,"

"Within my spirit that shall never fade."

"Reflect and grasp my purpose; it is high,"

"Above your fleeting life of retrograde."

The blackbird answered in the throes of death,

As death squeezed tight: "Hear now the answer made:"

"I see no echo for the weak man's right,"

"The conqueror’s decree alone is weighed."

"So execute the will that you desire,"

"And spare your grandeur from the prayers I prayed."

And thus, injustice forms a logic sweet,

To hide the ugliness of plots they laid.
