I will live, despite the illness and the foes,
Like an eagle atop the towering peak,
Gazing at the radiant sun, mocking
The clouds, the rains, and the storms.
I do not glance at the gloomy shadow, nor see
What lies deep within the black abyss.
I walk through a world of feelings, a dreamer,
Singing—such is the joy of the poets.
I listen to the music of life and its revelation,
And melt the spirit of the cosmos into my verse.
I harken to the divine voice that
Revives within my heart the dead echoes.
And I say to Fate, which never yields
In its war against my hopes with every trial:
"The raging fire within my blood shall not be quenched
By waves of sorrow or by storms of woe.
So destroy my heart if you can, for it
Shall remain like a solid, unyielding rock,
Knowing neither abject complaint nor weeping,
Nor the pleading of children and the weak.
It lives as a titan, gazing always
At the dawn—the beautiful, distant dawn.
Fill my path with terrors and gloom,
With whirlwinds of thorns and gravel,
Spread terror upon it, and cast down
The stones of doom and the lightning of misery.
I shall walk on despite it all, playing
My lyre, and chanting my song.
I walk with a spirit dreaming and aglow,
Amidst the darkness of pain and disease.
The light is in my heart and within my breast,
So why should I fear to tread through the dark?
For I am the flute whose melodies never cease,
So long as life remains in the living.
And I am the vast ocean, which the might of storms
Only increases in strength and vitality.
But when my life fades and my time is spent,
And death silences my playing flute,
And the cosmic flame dims within a heart
That lived burning like a crimson torch,
I shall be content to be transformed
Away from this world of sin and hate,
To dissolve into the dawn of eternal beauty,
And drink deeply from the fountain of light.
And I say to the mob who took pains
To destroy me, wishing for my ruin,
Who saw my shadow lifeless upon the thorns
And imagined that I had breathed my last,
Who went to kindle the flames with all
They found, to roast my remains upon it,
And spread the feast to devour my flesh,
And sip my blood in celebration:
I say to them, with a radiant face,
And a smile of mockery upon my lips:
'Your pickaxes shall not demolish my strength,
Nor shall the fire consume my limbs.
Throw your dry weeds into the fire and play,
O tribe of children, beneath my sky!
And when the storms rebel, and the heart
Of the blue dome is drunk with terror,
And you see me as a bird, singing
Above the whirlwinds in the distant expanse,
Then cast your stones at my shadow and hide
In fear of the wild winds and the storms.
And there, in the safety of your homes, exchange
Your trivial talk and dead opinions.
Chant whatever insults you desire,
And openly declare your enmity as you please.
But I answer you from high above,
With the sun and the beautiful twilight beside me:
He whose heart surges with sacred inspiration
Pays no heed to stones flung from the void.'"
