O night of the birth
O night of the birth,
How sweet was your vigil
How sweet was your evening discourse,
You healed whoever despaired
You healed the one burdened with hardships,
As the splendor of your gems shone
Who spent the night watching your radiant lights.
So God granted you bliss
May Allah, with boundless joy,
Among the nights He singled you out
Make you radiant among all nights.
The Merciful adorned you
The Merciful illuminated it
With the light of the sun of mankind
With the light of the sun of mankind,
Who is he in benevolence
He who is, in his benevolence,
A ruby in the rock
A ruby set among common stones.
The elucidator of confusion
By the clarifier of ambiguity,
The bearer of the standard and staff
By the bearer of the banner and the sword,
Who wards off misfortune
By the dispeller of misfortune
From the marvel of the wondrous religion
From the radiant face of this wondrous faith.
Of pleasant disposition
By the pure of soul,
Is he who was blessed with strange beauty
He who was singled out with extraordinary beauty,
Eyes lined with kohl
Whose eyelids are adorned with natural kohl,
And charm and delight
With deep black pupils and striking white contrast,
Teeth gleaming
With beautifully spaced teeth,
Smiling like pearls
Smiling to reveal what looks like pearls.
Our Prophet related
Our Prophet, whose noble lineage traces
To those of glorious renown
To those possessing captivating prestige,
Al-Mustafa, the beloved
The Chosen One, the Beloved,
Whose love blots out sins
He whose love erases all sins.
Eloquent in speech
Illuminated in his path and manner,
Foretelling the unseen
The informer of unseen realms.
Thus the greatest proof
And the greatest proof
Of his splendor
Of his dazzling splendor
Is that he brought the Qur’an
Is that he came with the Quran,
Which silences all dissenters
Silencing every audacious challenger.
No being of might
No possessor of power could find the strength
Stood up to the shining discourse
Against its luminous speech,
Of those eloquent
From among those with hardened hearts,
Poets of rhetoric
Nor any poet of great eloquence,
To parallel it in cadence
To ever follow its path
Rivalling it in arrangement
By opposing it in its perfect composition.
The Benefactor has protected him
The Bestower has protected it
From the insults of all dissenters
From the scratch of every doubter.
Does any human
Could any human harbor doubt,
Dare dissent that he was mortal
Considering he is but a mortal?
It suffices you of his glory
It suffices you as proof of his glory,
O you of ear and eye
O you who possess an ear and an eye,
And they were confounded by his purpose
And who are bewildered in your aim,
That a spring burst from his right hand
That a spring gushed forth from his right hand,
Quenching his armies
Which quenched the thirst of his soldiers,
And what transpired at Hunain
And what he gathered on the day of Hunayn,
When the two hosts clashed
When the two armies met,
And every deserter fled
And every deserter turned to flee,
From the defeat of the tribe of Hawazin
From the defeat of the idolaters
With a handful of pebbles
By a mere handful of stones.
O most ardent of lovers
O most precious of my treasures,
O best of those graced
O best of those who gave specifically and universally,
I pine in my longing
I have melted in my intense yearnings
For your fragrant tomb
For your lofty and noble tomb,
My shackles make me sick
And the chains of my destitution
The youth hopes for you
Have clothed me in a garment of sickness.
To win on the Day of Assembly
The sorrowful one places his hope in you
The children's hair turned white
For triumph on the Day of Gathering,
From its terrible spectacle
The day that turns the hair of children gray,
Grant your Prophet, O God
With its terrifying, unimaginable horror.
This wish which gives me relief
Bring about, O Messenger of Allah,
Bless Muhammad, O God
For this afflicted one a much-needed relief.
As long as a star shimmers in night's gloom
May Allah send His blessings upon you,
As long as one lost in desolation
As long as a star shines in the darkest night,
In the night of estrangement wandered
And as long as the lost wanderer sings
The night of passion expires
In a quieted night of abandonment.
And love is the soil of vigilance
The night of passion remains awake,
Patience betrayed me
And the lover is the companion of sleeplessness,
And sleep fled my eye
While patience has become a traitor to me,
And sleep is completely absent from my eyes.
