دَعِيُّ الشَّامِ إِنْْ تَجْهَلْ عَلَيْنَا

تَجِدْ حِلْماً وَإِغْضَاءً لَدَيْنَا

O pretender of Sham, should you act with insolence against us,

You will find in us only forbearance and a lowered gaze.

لَنَا هِمَمٌ تُجَنِّبُنَا الْمَخَازِي

فَلَوْ شِئْنَا هِجَاءَكَ مَا اهْتَدَيْنَا

We possess lofty resolves that spare us from disgraceful deeds,

So even if we wished to satirize you, we would not know the way.
